Organize Your Life with Closet Spring Cleaning Tips

Do you dread spring not for the accompanying allergy season, but for the need to change out your closet? Cleaning and organizing the closets in your home can be a daunting task. After all, closets are often the “catch-all” for forgotten and neglected items. If you feel overwhelmed by the thought of tackling such a large project, use these suggestions to de-clutter and breathe easier.

1. Break up the work
As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” The same concept applies to cleaning out your closets. Whether you’re simply rearranging things or making sweeping changes to your wardrobe, divide the work into smaller tasks and focus on one at a time.

2. Organize items into groups
Establish a clear pattern for organization and stick to it. Group your clothes, shoes and accessories into categories, either by type or by season. The WoodTrac® closet system makes organization easier by providing plenty of storage options. Tiltable shoe shelves, solid hanging rods and 5-panel drawers are just a few of the available features.

3. Clean the closet.
As you organize your closet, don’t forget to take this opportunity to clean it as well. Vacuum the floor and wipe down any shelves, rods or drawers that may be collecting dust. If you store your out-of-season shoes in boxes, be sure to wipe the boxes down as you change out seasonal shoes. If you have a WoodTrac closet, lightly dust or wipe down any surfaces with a wax-based polish and a dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or soaps, and avoid spraying any liquids directly onto the furniture.

4. Let go.
One reason people often struggle with cleaning out their closets is sentiment. Excuses like, “I know I will be able to wear those pants if I lose ten pounds” or “I’ve had that t-shirt since college”, can get in the way of a clean, uncluttered closet. Why not donate items to a local thrift store? A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t worn something in three years, it’s time for it to hang in someone else’s closet.  Another trick to consider is hanging everything in your closet backward. When you wear something, hang it up properly. At the end of the season, any item still hanging backward may be something you can donate.

WoodTrac understands that organizing a closet can be daunting, but with these tips, you can make spring cleaning a success. If you still find your current closet in disarray, it might be your closet system that needs help. As you cleaned and organized your closet, you may have found wasted space. It would be so nice to have shelves for stacking summer sweaters or double rods for hanging shirts and jackets. With this information in mind, this is the perfect time to check out the WoodTrac affordable wood closet systems that are available in a variety of sizes and design options tailored to fit your home and organizational needs.
