4 Tips for Spring Cleaning Before Organizing Your Closet

If you are challenged by all of the details you have to manage in your life between school, work or home, having an organized, straightened and clean closet will help you start your day with clarity and purpose. A very personal space, your closet is often the first place you go in the morning and the last stop you make at the end of the day. We offer four tips to help you conquer your closet this spring, starting with de-cluttering and cleaning tips, and finishing off with attractive and affordable organizational options for the closet.May-blog-1.jpg

1.     Decision time -- choose what to keep and what to throw away. This may be the hardest part of all! As you decide which shoes, clothes and accessories to keep, ask yourself - have you worn it recently? Is it a good fit and comfortable for wearing all day? Many women have whole wardrobes in different sizes, which might work if you have space to store it.

2.     Sort through one section of your closet at a time to keep from becoming overwhelmed. Emptying the closet out all at once will create too much clutter and leave you without room to sort.

3.     Seriously consider parting ways with the once-worn cocktail dress, bridesmaid’s dresses or your first big interview suit. If you went out shopping and saw it on the rack, is it something you would actually buy today? Plan to treat yourself to something new, and make room for it as you clean.
 4.    Once you have determined that certain things can be moved from your closet to another room in the house, selectively sort everything into boxes labeled by final destination, such as Guest Room Closet, Attic Storage, etc. After you’ve completed this, you’ll know exactly what needs to be stored in your closet. may-blog-2.jpg

WoodTrac Closet Organization Solutions
Now that you’ve effectively handled the closet de-cluttering and deep cleaning, it’s time to get the closet organized. First, evaluate your storage options and overall capacity. Since one of the main spring cleaning tasks is to reduce the amount of shoes, clothes and accessories, hopefully you’ve reduced your stored items down to a quantity appropriate for the size of your closet.

If you do not currently have a walk-in closet storage system, consider the variety of wood-based closet organization systems available from WoodTrac, a division of Sauder Woodworking. These ready-to-assemble modular closet systems can be customized to fit your closet size and configuration; and are available in white, cherry and espresso finishes. They include solid hanging rods set at full or half hanging height, four-sided drawer construction with full extension drawer slides, open shelves or shelves with doors including a solid back panel and tiltable shoe shelves. Toe kicks for floor mounting are included, and an optional wallboard is available for a built-in look.

WoodTrac reach-in closet systems are also available in white, cherry or espresso finishes. A simple, affordable alternative to traditional wire closets, the engineered wood shelves of the reach-in closet system allow clothes to be stored without the impression marks traditionally associated with wire shelving. Each WoodTrac reach-in closet kit includes three 48-inch shelves, rods, wall cleats and an upright, creating a double hang section and a long single hang section to maximize storage. Shelves, rods and cleats can be cut to size to fit 8-feet wide closets or smaller.
